
They are mobile and with strong infantry (Cav Riflemen and Paratroopers). (4) The proper armies to skirmish are Mechanized and Airborne. That way you force the enemy to commit units to other parts of the map and leaving flanks exposed here and there, that you should exploit since the AI is always more stupid than you. The tactic that you need is mobility and control the map as best as possible. Infantry is the key to this game, turtling at the base with AT + MG. Meaning, that even if you get 3 Shermans and try to push, you will get wasted by random Shreks and AT. (3) You can't win with numbers and power. It's not an easy task, so you might want to practice it in skirmish games against hard AI which does not begin with a unit advantage, like in Ardennes. Always pushing the two flanks with deviating routes to the middle will keep the battle to your enemy's base and not yours, you will see. If resistance damages you, fall back and start over.

If you find resistance on right or left, avoid the fight and go towards the middle. But if you are not going to be flanked, then it's an easy mission. Unless you are 100% sure you will not be flanked. (1) Turtle around the base with at least 3 AT on stand by just in case things go bad and you lose a side. The easy missions are important to treat as careful as possible, because despite being easy, they could grind you more than you would like. Keeping your army mobile is the key to superiority especially in Victory Point Missions. If something goes wrong in one objective fall back and try a different approach. Always go commando on the different objectives. Never dedicate a large part of your army in one place. Of course some units will be lost in big fights. But never send a unit against it's counter. (2) You should stick to a "lose 0 units" strategy. Restart and try a different angle without that loss. You should withdraw especially in a bad start, even with 1 unit loss. The individual missions are fun to play, but the grander scale of the events taking place all around you adds an extra layer of quality to the game. It’s these kinds of dynamics that make Ardennes Assault the type of game where your experience amounts to more than the sum of its parts. This is the third way in which strategy unfolds – individual battles are all part of a larger map in which the outcome of one battle can influence the start of another. This element isn’t new, but plays an important role in Ardennes Assault as battles carry over into one another even when your men don’t survive them. RPG influences can be seen in how your soldiers gain experience that carries over to other missions – making the loss of life much more than just a simple statistic. Instead, the game presents additional strategic challenges in other ways. Relic has a standard of excellence that is rarely matched in RTS games, and they haven’t changed their winning formula too much. Of course, there are plenty of missions that play out in detailed 3D maps with excellent character models and the gameplay we’ve come to love.

The element of strategy plays out on roughly three fronts in Ardennes Assault. Perhaps not one of the best-known areas of battle, but a strategically crucial one. As the name suggests, the battlefield of choice is the Belgian countryside during World War II. Unlike the previous expansion (Western Front Armies), Ardennes Assault focuses firmly on the game’s single player mode. Does it do justice to one of our all-time favorite real-time strategy games?
